Gileah Taylor – Slow Parade

Slow Parade is an AOTY candidate.

Indie artist Gileah Taylor and her album Slow Parade is the type of record I find myself increasingly drawn to. The slow burn variety. Music that is nuanced and subtle. The kind that soaks into your consciousness with repeat listens. This is music for the dark night of the soul yearning for the relief of daylight. The album explores themes of loneliness, dark vs. light, and hope amid grief.

Highlight songs abound, with opener “My Vision is Coming Back” gently setting the melancholic, yet hopeful tone. “Still Here” and “Watch the World Waking” continues the turn to the light featuring twangy guitars and gorgeous strings respectively. Think of the more recent Americana bent and vocal tone of Leigh Nash as a reference point. My other favorites as of this writing are “Way Out,” “Roll Over Me,” “Sweetness Surrounding” and my overall favorite, “Summer Jubilee.” The latter is a breezy throwback to the early days of rock & roll’s playful melodies and begs for repeat listens.

Ultimately, it’s been said that “good things come to those who wait,” and if you can adapt to the gentle sonics and patiently let Taylor’s music ‘steep,” you will be rewarded. In fact, I think you will join me in placing the Slow Parade near the top of your 2024 album list.
